Artist Statement

Art defines me in the sense that my creative inner being requires it, as my physical body needs food and water. Not as an 'obsession', but as a necessity in order to survive emotionally as a person. My creativity is nourished by the experience of painting. As a former art instructor at the Vero Beach Musuem of Art, I was able to teach my students of all ages, how to begin a painting, without fearing the white blank canvas and to enjoy the painting experience without concern for judgement by others. I have developed many techniques in my work such as loose brush strokes, drip paint methods, mixed media, textured, impasto, and encaustics; each having their own visual characteristics. Colors range from bold and bright with many shades and tones, to muted and/or monochromatic. The developed use of glazes and special final finishes are also prominent in many of the art pieces. Most of my paintings contain the elements of what is considered 'abstract' however, my main objective when creating art is to complete a visually aesthetic work that exhibits a form of story and/or emotion. Viewers tend to reflect their own ideas and emotions when observing my work. I encourage the observer to feel the textures, materials, layers, and various brushstrokes of paint on the canvas of my artwork as it adds to the visual experience. My work has been exhibited at galleries and public places in Florida, Oklahoma, and Illinois. Currently, I am a full time artist, having sold hundreds of paintings, at galleries and internet websites, to private and corporate collectors, nationally and internationally. In my studio, I sometimes have 5-6 paintings in progress, using various mediums. When exhibiting in galleries, I believe that it is best to have only one style paintings. The conformity makes a stronger statement. The versatility of different developed techniques presents a choice of how I want to be represented for the exhibit or gallery. My most current work in progress has been inspired by my son, Bryan Stork, who is an NFL Football Player for the New England Patriots. Not only do I strive to portray the rugged aspects of his hard work and determination, but I have been incorporating examples of notes and symbols, from his own football study notes, into my paintings. Each painting is a new journey with a new meaning.
